PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University is not your typical baseball team.

The Antelopes have a father-son combination in coach Andy Stankiewicz and freshman infielder Dane. They have only one senior, pitcher A.J. Franks, on their 32-man roster.

A youthful collection of players, their diverse roles and the dynamic of having family members on the same team create a unique group. They know leadership will be key to bringing the team together and achieving its goals, which include winning the Western Athletic Conference championship.

For last time, no March Madness option for GCU

PHOENIX —With Selection Sunday and March Madness approaching, college basketball teams dream of hearing their names called.

Unless they’re ineligible to compete in postseason play.

That’s the case for Grand Canyon University, which just finished its fourth and final season with postseason ineligibility, a reality prompted by its jump from Division II to Division I. The Antelopes will watch from afar as the Western Athletic Conference begins tournament play Wednesday in Las Vegas. The winner secures an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
