PHOENIX — Phoenix Christian pitcher Steven Cochran powered his Cougars to a Class 2A state championship on May 13 with a complete game performance, allowing six hits in a 9-2 win over Wilcox High School.

But Cochran came close to not being allowed to throw a single pitch on the biggest stage.

The night before, the junior closed out his team’s 4-1 victory over Scottsdale Christian Academy, striking out two of the seven batters he faced in the game’s final two innings. With a pitch count of 25, Cochran was just six pitches away from being ineligible to pitch in the championship game.

But on his 26th pitch, Cochran induced a game-ending double play that sent the Cougars into the championship.

“I could tell that I was going to be needed for the next game because we had lost our other pitcher so I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to go over 30,” Cochran said.

The “30” that Cochran referenced is the highest amount of pitches a sophomore, junior or senior can throw before needing at least one day’s rest under the new “Pitch Smart” rule implemented by the Arizona Interscholastic Association last summer. For freshmen, the number is even lower. They have a limit of 20 pitches before they are required to rest for one day.

PHOENIXArizona has become synonymous with baseball. Its growth in the Grand Canyon State is due in large part to Commissioner Emeritus Bud Selig.

When Selig took over Major League Baseball’s leadership in July of 1998, eight teams trained in the state for spring training and the Arizona Diamondbacks were in their inaugural season.

Today, Arizona is home to 15 MLB teams and 10 facilities, many state of the art.

It’s one of the reasons Selig will be inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in July. Continue reading “Hall of Fame-bound Selig impacted growth of baseball in Arizona”

PHOENIX — Chase Field is often described as a hitter’s paradise and a pitcher’s nightmare, but with the impending installation of a humidor, the Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to change that.

The Diamondbacks will become just the second team in Major League Baseball to use a humidor, a room that regulates the temperature and relative humidity of baseballs. As part of a nine-step ball-handling procedure introduced at the 2015 MLB winter meetings, baseballs must be kept at 70 degrees with 50 percent relative humidity to ensure consistency among all 30 teams.

PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University is not your typical baseball team.

The Antelopes have a father-son combination in coach Andy Stankiewicz and freshman infielder Dane. They have only one senior, pitcher A.J. Franks, on their 32-man roster.

A youthful collection of players, their diverse roles and the dynamic of having family members on the same team create a unique group. They know leadership will be key to bringing the team together and achieving its goals, which include winning the Western Athletic Conference championship.

PHOENIX — A new season means new players and new goals, but for Grand Canyon baseball coach Andy Stankiewicz, a familiar face graces the clubhouse.

His son’s.

Freshman Dane Stankiewicz and the 2-1 Antelopes open a three-game series at Wichita State today.

Despite Dane’s accomplishments at Gilbert High School, where he batted .307 his senior season while playing shortstop and second base, Andy didn’t want their relationship to cloud his judgment.
