GLENDALE — Just more than a month ago, Coyotes right-wing Radim Vrbata played in his 1,000th NHL game.

To celebrate the milestone, his teammates gave him the perfect gift — tickets to a major sporting event.

No, not hockey. Vrbata is a big tennis fan, who played the sport while growing up in the Czech Republic. So his Coyotes teammates got him tickets to Wimbledon.

Coyotes wing Martinook carved out a place in the NHL with hard work

GLENDALE — “Hard worker.”

In the culture of hockey, it might be the greatest compliment a player can get. And it is a label that Arizona Coyotes left wing Jordan Martinook wears proudly.

Martinook, 24, is an NHL late bloomer who was cut from five teams during his midget and junior days. His hard work has become the mainstay of his style of play, various coaches and teammates said. And fans voted him the team’s “Hardest Working Player” last season.

After being cut so many times as a young player, Martinook began to second guess himself. But rather than quit, he kept working at it. The adversity only made him want to chase the dream of playing in the NHL that much harder.

The Coyotes and captain Shane Doan put another Valley sports icon on ice

GLENDALE — It didn’t take long for Josh Margulies, the Arizona Coyotes new vice-president of marketing, to realize how much of an icon Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is in the desert.

“Outside of John McCain, he may be the most famous person in Arizona,” Margulies said. “You turn on sports radio, they’re always talking about Larry Fitzgerald. You turn on the news on television, they’re talking about him. It’s hard to miss that with him.”

Margulies moved to the Valley of the Sun just six months ago from the Bay Area.

It also didn’t take Margulies, who moved to the Valley from the Bay Area six months ago very long to see an opportunity in Fitzgerald’s popularity with almost all Arizona sports fans.
