Practitioners of trauma-releasing exercises (TRE), which are used by the Merritt Center, believe that energy generated during high-stress events can cause post-traumatic reactions in the brain if it isn’t released.

These exercises are designed to release that energy using rapid breathing and exhaustion of abdominal muscles that contract during flight or fight behavior. The exercises cause involuntary tremors, mimicking the body’s natural response to trauma.
