Provisions of bill to allow used tires in abandoned mines

Here are key provisions of HB 2278 as amended by Rep. Russell L. Jones, R-Yuma:

_ Include waste tires as material that can be used to close abandoned mines;

_ Make the use of waste tires as fill material in abandoned mines a permissible method of tire disposal;

_ Require the state mine inspector to consult with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and state fire marshal on public safety and aquifer-protection issues before using tires to fill a mine;

_ Exclude abandoned mines filled with waste tires from being classified as solid waste facilities;

_ Require waste tires in abandoned mines to be covered by 10 feet of earthen material.
