BILLS DEALING WITH SPECIAL LICENSE PLATES

Here are several bills to create special license plates and their status at the Arizona State Legislature:

IN GOD WE TRUST / ARIZONA HIGHWAYS

HB 2046, intended to create a plate honoring and raising money for Arizona Highways magazine, was amended by Sen. Ron Gould, R-Lake Havasu City, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, to also allow the creation of a special plate saying “In God We Trust.”

  • Sponsor: Rep. Marian McClure, R-Tucson.
  • Status: Approved by Senate and returned to House.

HB 2250, intended to deal with procedures for requesting special organization plates, was amended by Gould to allow the creation of an “In God We Trust” plate.

  • Sponsor: Rep. Jerry Weiers, R-Glendale.
  • Status: Passed House and awaiting action by full Senate.

ARIZONA MASONIC FRATERNITY

HB 2067, which originally dealt with Arizona Game and Fish Commission revocation of guide licenses, was changed through a strike-everything amendment by Sen. Jake Flake, R-Snowflake, chairman of the Senate Natural Resources and Rural Affairs Committee, to allow creation of an Arizona Masonic Fraternity plate.

  • Original Sponsor: Rep. Jerry Weiers, R-Glendale.
  • Status: Passed House in original form and passed Senate Natural Resources and Rural Affairs Committee with strike-everything amendment.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

HB 2023 would create a “Support Our Troops” plate.

  • Sponsor: Rep. Jonathan Paton, R-Tucson.
  • Status: Passed by House. Awaiting action by Senate Transportation Committee.

GOLD STAR FAMILIES / ARIZONA PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL CLUB

SB 1083, originally intended to create a “Gold Star Families” plate that would be issued to immediate families of war dead, was amended by Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Gilbert, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, to also call for an Arizona Professional Basketball Club special plate, with proceeds going to Phoenix Suns Charities.

  • Main Sponsor: Sen. Jim Waring, R-Phoenix.
  • Status: Amended bill returned to Senate.
