FACTS ABOUT STATE EQUALIZATION PROPERTY TAX

Here are some facts about the state equalization property tax:
_ Enacted: 1981, as the county equalization assistance for education tax.
_ Purpose: Proceeds used to fund school districts in each county.
_ Status: Suspended by state law in 2006; would come back in 2009. HB 2220, passed by the Legislature, would get rid of it permanently.
_ Value: Estimated to be worth $250 million annually in tax revenue if it returns.
