Here are some bills that address Native American issues:

HB 2527:
_ Author: Rep. Chris Deschene, D-St. Michaels.
_ Provisions: Would exempt students who speak a Native American language from English immersion classes even if they fail demonstrate a basic grasp of English language skills.
_ Status: Not taken up in committee.

HCM 2008
_ Author: Rep. Chris Deschene, D-St. Michaels.
_ Provisions: Urges Congress to designate the Bennett Freeze area of the Navajo Nation as economically depressed and to provide resources to develop the area.
_ Passed House.

SB 1454
_ Author: Sen. Albert Hale, D-Window Rock
_ Provisions: Would give tribes 50 percent of the revenues from the Transaction Privilege Tax that is imposed on non-Indian businesses on tribal land.
_ Status: Senate hasn’t taken up bills while it deals with the budget.
SB 1114
_ Author: Sen. Jorge Luis Garcia, D-Tucson
_ Provisions: Would expand the Arizona Commission on Indian Affairs to include a representative of a recognized urban Native American center.
_ Status: Senate hasn’t taken up bills while it deals with the budget.

_ Provisions: Would urge Congress to allow the Navajo Nation to develop its own tribal child support computer system and reduce the ratio of Navajo money to federal money that is required in order to receive federal funds.
