I’M ( go to story )
Voter registration – (C&C / Mikenzie+Jimena)
THERE ARE ONLY 19 DAYS LEFT TO REGISTER TO VOTE BEFORE THE GENERAL ELECTION IN NOVEMBER. ADVOCACY GROUPS AROUND THE STATE ARE TRYING TO GET MORE PEOPLE READY TO CAST THEIR BALLOTS. A STATE-WIDE COALITION OF GROUPS AND LOCAL LEADERS MET AT THE CAPITOL THIS WEEK TO URGE VOTERS TO MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD. AMONG THEM WERE MI FAMILIA VOTA, PROMISE ARIZONA AND LYDIA GUZMÁN WITH CHICANOS POR LA CAUSA.
“We want to make sure that every community is empowered. Simply by voting, they have a stronger voice. And that’s what we’re trying to accomplish.”
IN ANOTHER PART OF THE VALLEY, REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE PHOENIX INDIAN CENTER SAY IN PREVIOUS ELECTIONS, THE TURNOUT WAS BIG. THEY SAY THE MOMENTUM IS SOMETHING THEY WANT TO MAINTAIN. THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IS OCTOBER 11TH, AND THE MIDTERM ELECTION IS ON NOVEMBER 8TH.
Election laws – (Reader / Michele)
NEARLY 400 LAWS CAME OUT OF THIS YEAR’S LEGISLATIVE SESSION. MORE THAN A DOZEN RELATE TO ELECTION REFORMS.
TODAY WE’LL TOUCH ON A FEW OF THEM. ONE NEW LAW MANDATES REAL-TIME TABULATION OF BALLOTS ON ELECTION DAY PARTICULARLY COUNTING EARLY BALLOTS RETURNED AT VOTING LOCATIONS.
ANOTHER CHANGES THE RECOUNT MARGIN IF THE ELECTION RESULTS ARE WITHIN ONE-HALF OF ONE PERCENT, AS COMPARED TO THE OLD LAW WHICH TRIGGERED RECOUNTS AT ONE-TENTH OF ONE-PERCENT.
MEANWHILE THE ARIZONA GAME AND FISH DEPARTMENT IS NOW REQUIRED TO HAND OUT VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS WHEN PEOPLE SIGN UP FOR A HUNTING OR FISHING LICENSE WHETHER ON-LINE OR IN PERSON.
FINALLY, SAME DAY VOTER REGISTRATION IS BANNED. IN FACT IT’S A FELONY TO REGISTER PEOPLE TO VOTE ON AN ELECTION DAY. ALL THESE NEW LAWS TAKE EFFECT THIS SATURDAY.
Naturalized Citizens (MINI / Kenny)
HOST INTRO:
A NEW STUDY FINDS ARIZONA BECAME HOME TO THOUSANDS OF NEWLY NATURALIZED CITIZENS BETWEEN 2016 AND 2020. CRONKITE NEWS’ KENNY RASMUSSEN REPORTS THEY HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO IMPACT WHAT HAPPENS FOR THE MIDTERMS
——–
THE MAJORITY OF THESE NEW CITIZENS LIVE IN PHOENIX, TUCSON, AND YUMA. 57% OF THEM ARE YOUNGER THAN 45. THAT’S ACCORDING TO A NEW STUDY RELEASED BY THE NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR NEW AMERICANS. IT’S A VOTING DEMOGRAPHIC THAT ORGANIZATIONS LIKE NEXTGEN AMERICA ARE EAGER TO MOBILIZE AHEAD OF NOVEMBER.
ANTONIO ARELLANO IS NEXTGEN AMERICA’S VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMUNICATIONS. HE SAYS THERE’S A MAJOR FACTOR MOBILIZING YOUNG VOTERS AHEAD OF THE MIDTERMS.
“the decision to overturn roe has galvanized and energized young voters like never before, and they are taking action and registering to vote to protect abortion rights.”
ARELLANO SAYS ECONOMIC JUSTICE IS A CLEAR ISSUE FOR LATINO VOTERS IN A RECENT POLL. HE SAYS YOUNG LATINOS FACE STUDENT DEBT AND AN ECONOMY THAT’S HARD TO GET AHEAD IN. (at 05:25)
“and so young latinos want an economy that allows them to buy a home, allows them to get a car, allows them to get ahead and stay ahead, which unfortunately hasn’t been the reality up until this point.” 13 sec
NEXTGEN IS HELPING GET THE VOTE OUT BY REGISTERING YOUNG PEOPLE ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES AND REACHING OUT THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA. ARELLANO SAYS THEY’RE MAKING A BIG PUSH DURING SEPTEMBER WHICH MARKS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH (at 06:22)
“we’re gonna make sure we do a direct targeted outreach to this community to make that they see themselves reflected in policies and politics and that they recognize the full power and potential they have to drive forward transformative change. ”
THE NUMBER OF NEW CITIZENS WHO ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IS ROUGHLY SIX TIMES AS LARGE AS THE MARGIN BY WHICH BIDEN WON ARIZONA. THE STATE WILL BE A CRITICAL STATE DURING THE MIDTERMS WITH A COMPETITIVE SENATE RACE AND A CONTESTED GOVERNOR’S RACE.
KENNY RASMUSSEN, CRONKITE NEWS.
Prop 309 debate – (C&C/ HORIZON )
VOTERS WILL BE ASKED THIS NOVEMBER WHETHER THEY WANT TO REQUIRE A PHOTO I.D. FOR IN-PERSON VOTING AND A SIGNED STATEMENT UNDER OATH FOR MAIL-IN BALLOTS. RIGHT NOW, IN-PERSON VOTERS WITHOUT PHOTO I.D. CAN SHOW TWO ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF IDENTIFICATION, LIKE A UTILITY BILL, AND MAIL-IN VOTERS ONLY NEED A SIGNATURE FOR THEIR BALLOT TO BE COUNTED. UNDER THIS MEASURE, IN-PERSON VOTERS WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ALTERNATE FORMS OF I.D. AND MAIL-IN VOTERS WOULD NEED TO SUBMIT THEIR BIRTH DATE, VOTER I.D. OR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS TO BE CONSIDERED VALID.
THIS WEEK, REPUBLICAN STATE SENATOR J.D. MESNARD (MEZ-nard) FROM DISTRICT 17 AND PINNY SHEORAN ( “PENNY SHARON”), PRESIDENT OF THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF ARIZONA, ARGUED THE PROS AND CONS OF PROPOSITION 309 ON THE SHOW HORIZON ON ARIZONA PBS. MESNARD (MEZ-nard) SAYS THE NEW LAW WOULDN’T CHANGE MUCH ABOUT THE ELECTION PROCESS.
“This just says that if you’re showing up in person, we need to be able to match the face to the photo, so you do need to have photo I.D. And if you can’t afford one or don’t have one, like a drivers license number, we’ll provide you one for free,”
SHEORAN (SHARON) ARGUES THAT TRIBAL I.D.s WOULD BE EXCLUDED UNDER THE NEW LAW. MANY TRIBES DO NOT HAVE THE STANDARD FORM OF PHOTO I.D. OR FORMAL STREET ADDRESSES. SHEORAN SAYS, IF PASSED, WHAT’S KNOWN AS PROP 309 WOULD CREATE ANOTHER CHALLENGE FOR INDIGENOUS VOTERS.
