NAVAJO NATION KEEPS MASK MANDATE IN PLACE

AS MOST STATES START TO DROP MASK RECOMMENDATIONS OR MANDATES, THE NAVAJO NATION WILL KEEP ITS MASK MANDATE IN PLACE. IN THE NAVAJO NATION, THE MASK MANDATE HAS BEEN IN EFFECT SINCE EARLY IN THE PANDEMIC. THE 27-THOUSAND SQUARE-MILE RESERVATION EXTENDS INTO NEW MEXICO, UTAH AND ARIZONA AND HAS BEEN SEVERELY IMPACTED BY THE PANDEMIC. NAVAJO PRESIDENT JONATHAN NEZ SAYS PEOPLE MUST BE CAUTIOUS AND CONTINUE TO MASK-UP.

         Arizona has been experiencing a major increase in rent pricing

IN ARIZONA THERE ARE NO LAWS THAT CAP HOW MUCH RENT CAN BE RAISED ON TENANTS. THE AVERAGE RENT FOR A 1 BEDROOM APARTMENT IN PHOENIX IS CURRENTLY 13-HUNDRED DOLLARS ACCORDING TO SURVEY DATA BY RENTAL LISTING ZUMPER . THIS IS A 23% INCREASE COMPARED TO LAST YEAR. MESA, GILBERT AND GLENDALE ALSO SAW THE MOST GROWTH IN RENT LAST YEAR .  DEMAND FOR RENT CONTINUES TO REMAIN HIGH IN PHOENIX, WHICH IS A RAPIDLY GROWING SPOT IN THE COUNTRY. IN TUCSON, THE MAYOR’S OFFICE SAYS IT HAS BEEN OVERWHELMED WITH CALLS FROM RESIDENTS WORRIED ABOUT RENT HIKES. ARIZONA SEN. KYRSTEN SINEMA DENOUNCED THE INCREASES DURING A RECENT SENATE BANKING COMMITTEE HEARING. SHE SAYS ARIZONA’S RAPIDLY GROWING HOUSING COSTS HAVE BEEN A “MAJOR CONCERN” OF HERS FOR YEARS.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is paving the way for less carbon emissions

ABOUT FOUR MILLION PASSENGERS FLEW OUT OF FROM PHOENIX SKY HARBOR LAST YEAR… AND ALL THOSE PLANES LANDING AND TAKING OFF LEAVE BEHIND A CARBON FOOTPRINT. BUT AS CRONKITE NEWS’S AUTRIYA MANESHNI (AW-tree-yuh MA-nesh-nee), EXPLAINS SOME AIRLINES ARE USING   SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL TO HELP.

IT’S NO SECRET PEOPLE ARE BACK TO TRAVELING BY AIR DURING THE PANDEMIC.

<sot – MIKE ROLLAND/TRAVELER/ runs :06 hits :7;11-:13;10>

“Before COVID, two to three times a year, but this is my first trip in over two years.”

AND SOME PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TRAVELING A LOT.

<sot – CONNOR MULLINS/TRAVELER/ runs :03 hits :19-:22>

“I travel about every two months or so.”

FOR SOME TRAVELERS, TAKING A PLANE COMES DOWN TO CONVENIENCE AND SPEED.

<sot – CLAUDIA MCIVOR/TRAVELER/  runs :08 hits :24-:33>

“I lived in Florida and my dad used to live in Virginia, so I had to choose between a 15-hour drive or a two-hour flight. ”

BUT AS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE FLY EVERY YEAR… THERE IS AN IMPACT FROM CARBON EMISSIONS. THE AVIATION INDUSTRY ACCOUNTS FOR TWO POINT FIVE PERCENT OF HUMAN MADE CARBON EMISSIONS. THAT’S ACCORDING TO OUR WORLD IN DATA.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER? CARBON EMISSIONS CONTRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE WHICH IS CAUSING  RISING TEMPERATURES, SEA LEVEL INCREASE, DROUGHTS AND MORE.

WITHOUT ANY CHANGES, AVIATION COULD CONSUME 22-PERCENT OF THE WORLD’S TOTAL CARBON BUDGET BY 2050.

SO SOME AIRLINES ARE TURNING TO SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL AS A SOLUTION.

<sot – TIMOTHY TAKAHASHI/PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE FOR AEROSPACE ENGINEERING, ASU SCHOOL FOR ENGINEERING OF MATTER, TRANSPORT AND ENERGY/ runs :17 hits 1:15-1:32>

“So when people are talking about sustainable fuel for airplanes, most of the time they are talking about liquid fuels that are made from some biological source so a fermentation product, it could be corn, could be used waste oil and the like.”

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL IS A DROP-IN FUEL. THAT MEANS  IT CAN BE SHIPPED AND BLENDED WITH TRADITIONAL JET FUEL.

<sot – TIMOTHY TAKAHASHI/PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE FOR AEROSPACE ENGINEERING, ASU SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING OF MATTER, TRANSPORT AND ENERGY/ runs: :17 hits 1:43-2:00>

“We’re going to recirculate carbon atoms that already exist by having plant life, fix carbon atoms into either cellular structure and then we’re going to brew that up in a combustible fuel that can easily be transported and used to power an airplane”

AIRLINES, SUCH AS AMERICAN, SOUTHWEST, JET BLUE, UNITED AND KLM…TO NAME A FEW… HAVE ALL MADE A COMMITMENT TO USE SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL IN THEIR FLEET.

UNITED MADE HISTORY AS THE FIRST AIRLINE TO FLY A PASSENGER PLANE ON 100-PERCENT SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL…. IN DECEMBER OF LAST YEAR.

IN PHOENIX, AUTRIYA MANESHNI, CRONKITE NEWS.

THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, TRANSPORTATION AND AGRICULTURE HAVE LAUNCHED THE SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL GRAND CHALLENGE. SOME OF THEIR MAIN GOALS ARE TO MAKE SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL MORE COST EFFECTIVE AND WIDELY AVAILABLE TO THE AVIATION INDUSTRY.

Tempe Lost and Found

THE CITY OF TEMPE IS SETTING UP ITS OWN VERSION OF A LOST AND FOUND. TEMPE’S HOMELESS SOLUTIONS TASK FORCE IS PLANNING A NEW STORAGE PROGRAM. THE GOAL IS  TO REUNITE PEOPLE WITH ITEMS THEY’VE LEFT BEHIND IN THE CITY’S PARKS AND PUBLIC SPACES.

TEMPE’S CITY COUNCIL APPROVED 25-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE PROGRAM LAST YEAR. THE CITY IS CURRENTLY SEEKING A VENDOR WHO CAN LOG, TRANSPORT AND STORE FOUND ITEMS.
