Here are quick facts about HR 5583, dubbed the Grand Canyon Watersheds Protection Act of 2008:

_ Sponsor: Rep. Raul M. Grijalva, D-Ariz.

_ Introduced: March 11.

_ Status: Passed House. Stalled in the Senate.

_ Purpose: A response to reports of exploratory drilling for uranium a few miles from the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, it would withdraw from mining approximately 1 million acres.

_ Areas Affected: About 630,000 acres managed by Bureau of Land Management near Kanab Creek, which flows into the canyon from the north. About 110,000 acres of BLM land in House Rock Valley north of the canyon. About 330,000 acres in the Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest south of the canyon.
